An Appeal To Every "Educated" Indian
I’m a proud citizen of the culturally diverse country of India. I take great pride in the diversity of this country. But, can you believe that this country which has a huge expatriate community in all corners of the world still has millions living in abject poverty.
Children below 14 years of age work, when their childhood should be spent running around the streets. Malnutrition and communicable diseases kill children before they even reach the age of 5. Here, women are scared of stepping out of their homes after dark in most parts of the country for fear of crime and violence. A girl or a woman out of their home at night is always threatened. The biggest reason for violence against women is unemployment. The biggest reason for unemployment is lack of good education and basic infrastructure such as clean drinking water, sanitation, medical facilities and electricity.
Criminal activities are a huge draw for the poor as they provide a seemingly easy way out of unemployment and poverty. So many lives are ruined due to the smuggling of addictive substances every year. So many lives of meaningful learning and employment wasted due to being engaged in criminal activity.
Corruption is rampant everywhere due to the human tendency of never being satisfied with what one earns. Non payment of taxes in India is a huge reality. The smallest shopkeeper can be found evading taxes by not generating bills of sales made in cash. Thus, reducing the income shown to tax authorities. The people here have this misconception that laws are made to be broken.
Can you believe a country with the second largest (recorded) population of 1.25 billion having only 2.4 million people ready to declare that their annual income is more than a million. Hard to digest isn’t it? This is the hard truth of the story of India’s stagnation of never emerging out of the developing country tag.
The simplest solution to all these problems is higher volume of tax paid. Because that is only way the development of this country can happen. I appeal to all those reading this that they should pledge that they will pay their taxes and do their part in the development of this country.
