India Lags Behind At The Hands Of Insipid Leadership
India has been known for being one of the only countries that didn't invade another country in its long history. Though it has been conquered and ruled by different rulers before gaining Independence that too by non violent means speaks volumes about its leadership.
In the last three decades however, the economy has gone through loads of upheaval. At one point in the year 1991, there was foreign exchange that could last only a fortnight. The liberalisation of the economy brought a lot of economic growth.
Yet there is rampant malnutrition, farmer suicides, strife in some parts and constant uproar in a whole province of the country. This sure raises doubts about the leadership of this country.
The way the election campaigning takes place is promises and some vile talk about the opponent party’s candidates. And amid all this there's the caste and reservation theme. A member of a particular community woos a particular community to vote for such and such political party, promising reservation of government jobs.
No political leader takes up the plight of farmers with small pieces of land who lost all their money in a drought. They’re just looking to be voted into power, to fill their pockets. On voting day, money or food is given to the poor to vote for a particular party. Reservation of posts hasn't really uplifted the poor state of the marginalized communities. This can only be done by providing better education, and the development of basic infrastructure. India has failed miserably on both these steps.
The situation of the poor hasn’t improved much in all these years since Independence. Many villages are yet to get access to electricity, roads have reached most though. At the start of this decade, half of India practiced open defecation. The quality of education leaves much to be desired too, factors being poor teaching & sanitation.
In the forested and mineral rich parts of the nation, villagers took up arms in guerilla fashion forming an organization labelled as Naxals, attacked all government symbols. They would attack polling booths too. In the last decade or two, their power has waned greatly, due to greater action by the Police & Special Forces.
Malnutrition continues to be a topic of shame for this country as this continues to be an area of inaction. This issue can be addressed by efficient use of water and making food grains inexpensive, but, this will only come into focus if the politicians stop clouding their vision with the caste reservation issue.
The biggest and most troubling situation of all is healthcare which again has been oft neglected in rural areas with medicines and treatments being expensive for most people. Some corners of the country don’t have hospitals for miles. Some parts of the country are yet untouched by road connectivity.
The problems that an average Indian citizen face are numerous and the only way out, is people who are educated should at least pay their taxes and do their bit in teaching the next generation the value of doing the same.
