THE CHALLENGE OF THE ENVIRONMENT

The challenge posed by the changing environment is set to grow bigger.  But, one might ask when was it small? Well, hold your horses people! We Indians have had scant respect for the environment as we are too busy fending for ourselves and our comforts.

Well, let me ask you some small but, pertinent question. Who wants the air conditioner in summer? Can't we bear the heat and keep the fan on? The very heat has been increased by our whim to roll about town in the cozy comfort of our aircon equipped car, even for measly distances.

Our air conditioners have made holes in the ever so important Ultraviolet Ray deflecting lifeline called the ozone layer increasing temperatures in the Southern Hemisphere, accelerating the melting of ice sheets in Antarctica, a vulnerable ecosystem. Add to it global warming, the greenhouse gases trap heat of the sun. Which are the greenhouse gases? Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrous Oxide, Ozone and Water Vapour.

Let me tell you another important thing, friends. The melting of ice sheets will increase sea and ocean levels, the world over. New York, Mumbai and other such port cities which drive the world are in for a rude shock as these cities might well be eaten by the sea.

This summer has been the warmest in two decades and temperatures are not gonna come down, so cut down on your carbon footprints, avoid over consumption of electricity, adopt composting, recycling and other such green ways of life as it's time to turn into green warriors and save the day. If the community doesn't participate then it's the collective failure of mankind.

The next issue, extinction, well, you might say why care about extinction of tigers, elephants and deers? Our whole existence depends on them, if they all vanish, then our forests, whatever is left of them that is, will also vanish. Forests have prevented global warming from aggravating, but, if endangered animals are not conserved then, the end of the world is not many centuries away.

Next, what about transportation? How will it turn eco friendly. Answer to your question is if we don't turn electric on and fossil fuel off, then, the switch of human power is the last resort.

Well, how will we cross the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean? How will Japan, so dependent on imported food, feed its teeming cities? Well, we need ships with electric motors as huge as houses in which we people live. Simple as that, but how will steel be manufactured, again, electricity. We need to develop solar power plants and wind farms, across countries which experience blaring sunshine and gusts of wind.

Germany is the 3rd largest producer of solar energy. Confused, how a nation experiencing so less sunshine achieve this? Well, Germany encouraged people to install solar panels on their rooftops and sell extra power generated to the power grid and earn money. Greed satisfied and green moves done.

We just need a vision and willingness to do things. Take action don't just stay back on the couch and read my views, do something. Couch potatoes wake up, lazy bones run, we need to create examples for the next generation for humans are the most intelligent species on Mother Earth, which is not replaceable, respect, preserve and conserve it.
